IOT Ecosystems

At Kovendi we see IOT technology in three layers, called the DEVICE LAYER,
the PLATFORM LAYER and the ANALYTICS LAYER.

The device layer is the ‘connected things’. The cars, the pumps, the street lights. Gartner tells us that there are about eight billion devices connected worldwide today, which is 30% more than last year, and it will be around twenty billion by 2020.

The second layer is the platform layer, which is the middleware that gathers data from the devices and that creates the ‘data lakes’ that are used by IOT applications to deliver usable information.
The third layer is the analytics layer. In many ways this is where the IOT value sits, as this is where customer value is created. This layer is where the data analytics, the AI vendors and the application developers sit.

CASE STUDY

Johnson Controls make devices that manage power, heating, ventilation and many other functions, so they are coming from the ‘device layer’. The company has 170,000 employees. Today Johnson Controls is moving into the ‘platform layer’ and the ‘analytics layer’. It has created an IOT platform and is identifying device installers who can become Smart Building specialists, using data and smart applications to monitor and manage buildings.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Device vendors of all types are creating new customer value by gathering data from devices and making this data available on IOT platforms for analytics and AI tools.

As device vendors move from the device layer into the platform and analytics layer they need to create ecosystems of partners who use or develop vertical applications.

Vendors with legacy dealer and resell channels need to support their network to transform, using data and analytics to reduce customer cost and improve service.
