MANAGEMENT OF MOVING ASSETS

Vehicle Telematics is impacting the business models of car and truck manufacturers, and a whole range of other enterprises involved in managing moving assets, like heavy equipment and shipping.

It’s estimated that by 2025 there will be 116 million connected cars in the US, each uploading 25 gigabytes of data to the cloud each hour. Monetizing on board services could generate in excess of $1.5 trillion in incremental revenues for automakers. Way more than will be lost in any forecast reduction in vehicle sales.

Telematics devices send data not just about vehicle performance, but also about location, speed and for commercial vehicles about trailer temperature and security.
Massive amounts of data are being generated. So analytics software and fleet management applications are more and more important as part of automotive ecosystems.

In the automotive sector, manufacturers face two ecosystem challenges. The first challenge is how to support dealer networks as they transform from pure vehicle resell, to be ecosystem partners by adding customer value using data and applications. The second challenge is how to build extended IOT partner ecosystems to create a ‘marketplace’ for software solutions that embed, or link into, core manufacturer-owned telematics technology.
